In the tradition of fine British Fly Tyers, I give you the mixtures that I have used for years. I was first introduced to this wax while living and tying in the UK. My tying mentor, John Batchelor swore by the stuff to give you just enough tack to your thread to hold a tight dubbing noodle or to keep biots from slipping. I use it on my initial wraps to secure the thread to the hook, secure that first lose wrap of elk hair or on just about anything you want to secure in place with fewer wraps. It helps keep the profile slim and even. I quick swipe and dubbing fibers stick easily allowing a sparser and more tapered noodle on the first go. I think wax makes me a better tyer and provides my flies with a better durability and a cleaner finish.
The wax is made here in small batches in the shop. I press a magnet in the back of a cake, and stick it to my tying light so it’s at hand to run the thread through before making a wrap. Keeping it off the bench prevents every tag end snipped off from sticking to it and making a mess.
I’ll include a couple seed magnets with each order for your convenience.
721 is the standard wax and is my primary go-to. When the winter temperatures arrive and the shop is colder, I use the 722. It is a tad bit softer and has a higher tack. The Brits called this blend “winter wax” as it stays soft in colder temperatures.
I’ve added the options to order either 721 or 722, or a cake of each depending on your needs.
