Walt Young of Altoona Pennsylvania is credited with the original design for this fly. A simple wrap of hares ear dubbing to imitate scuds on the limestone creeks of my youth. When someone added a flash wrap and a hotspot -Walts became sexy, and if I only had one fly, this would be it.
I tie my Walts with just a little loose dubbing around the collar to give it a slightly more buggy appearance.
The classic, or at least the first iteration I am aware of added a copper bead to the fly. I have added a couple more variants to the pile that I have used over the years.
Dark n Sexy adds a black nickel bead to dark hares ear and a red vice orange hotspot.
Sexy Chocolate takes a Mounds Bead coupled with some iridescent brown dubbing.
Sexy Purple takes the silver bead and two shades of purple dub to get a bit of UV up front.
Naked uses the “birthday suit” bead that is raw and unfinished tungsten. Not black, not silver but a very nice grey.
Olive Walt’s is a fuzzy version of the highly successful Olive Body Quill Perdigon.
Walt’s is another fly that makes a terrific dropper if you are not nymphing.
