Prince Nymphs have been around for over 75 years for a reason-they produce. It’s a go-to dropper fly under a dry in a smaller size, and in larger size is great as a point fly under a wet. It’s debatable if it’s a stone or a mayfly imitator but it works for me as a searching or attractor pattern. It’s trademark white goose biot wings provide the point that sets it apart from other flies and for me, makes it a Prince. I’ve included my top 4 bead head variations of this fly. These are offered on a barbless 2XL nymph hook.
The Classic tied with peacock herl body and hen soft hackle and a red collar.
The Joker gets its name from the color scheme used by its namesake in Batman. Trout key on purple, so throw in some chartreuse tail, rib and hackle with a blood red collar and thee you have it.
The Black Prince is a favorite on those dark days where the water is stained or there is lower light. Tied with a black bead, black sparkle rib and coal black Antron dubbing, the white wings really set the fly off. Good stonefly imitator in the 10-12 sizes.
The Turkey is a pattern I came up with after a friend of mine gifted me a lot of turkey feathers. The tail is turkey biots from the wing feathers and the body is wrapped tail fibers. The copper bead and wire set it off. In homage the the hunter, a fluorescent orange hot spot in on the collar.
