The Pheasant Tail Nymph has been a staple in fly boxes for every level of fly fisher. I well remember getting a small wallet of weighted nymphs from Orvis in the early 80’s, and that sparked my passion for nymphing when there was not much of it about. The PTN was one that really caught fish-because it got down where the fish were. Here’s my twist on Frank Sawyer’s timeless classic. I use plenty of weight wraps and forgo the bead in keeping with the original. Instead of the peacock thorax, I bug it up with some super buggy spikey squirrel dubbing . Finish that off with a resin wing case, and it’s ready for the water. The squirrel dubbing gives it some great movement to get the fish making a bee line for it.
