Developed by the extraordinary fly tyer John Barr, this pattern is another indispensable pattern for any box. Fish as a dropper, a point fly or as a tandem rig, this fly, which really imitates nothing while imitating everything, is a producer. I have to wonder, did Mr Barr have a Perdigon before the advent of the Euro Nymph? Maybe. I’ve included some other colors of the standard pattern that have been successful over the years for me. Some of my own and some handed down patterns.
These are tied on a barbless competition nymph hook and brass bead. I tie these with a lead thorax so the brass bead version is heavy. As always happy to accommodate your wishes for your water if you want tungsten or barbs.
Classic is a bit jazzed up from the original copper wire body, partridge legs and hot spot.
Cowboy John has more to do with being brown and yellow wire rather than being effective in Wyoming, but I’ll bet a dozen this pattern will perform on the North Platte as well as it does on the Tuckaseegee.
7-Up is a pattern that uses alternating silver and chartreuse wraps and a silver bead. Lefty said if “ if it ain’t chartreuse, it ain’t no use”. I agree.
Monty’s Favorite is a pattern handed down to me while fishing Upper Creek. The addition of wiggle dub and a red and blue combo makes this a unique fly that performs really well with WNC wild fish.
Mil-Spec is that famous olive and green combo used successfully on many different patterns.
Brassie John is much like the original but using gold wire and a red collar.
