For me, smallies are pound for pound one of the most aggressive freshwater game fish and are a blast all summer with a fly rod. While the CT Buggers are all round good flies for them,  they really dial in on crayfish (crawdads ‘round here) and here’s a couple pattens I have found to be really effective. \n\nI tie two patterns, ZonkerCraws and StrawCraws. The ZonkerCraw is a bit heavier and is primarily fur, while the StrawCraw uses Swiss Straw for the carapace and abdomen and squirrel tail fibers for the claws. I love a bugger for sure, and this variant is no exception.  I slightly modified the original by putting this on a heavy jig streamer hook, upping the bead size to drop the head a raise the tail, and keeping a pair of rubber legs in the front as well as trailing. A collar of some soft hackle rounds it out for maximum movement on the drift and the strip. Think of it as a Knuckle Dragger meets  a conventional bugger.
